Coyotes

Feral Pigs

Coyotes are the smallest canines native to north America (foxes are not canines).

They used to range exclusively in the Yellowstone area. With the near eradication of wolves and almost all their competition, the coyote population has exploded and they can be found in nearly every state aside from Hawaii. These extremely intelligent animals are very resourceful and this characteristic has allowed them to populate everywhere from remote areas to urban cities. They will prey on everything from small pets to calves which takes money directly out of ranchers and wildlife managers pockets. Even if your animals aren’t getting killed, the mere presence of coyotes causes stress to wildlife and livestock that decreases production by means of just finishing weight or even still births.

Signs of coyote predation:

– Wildlife or Livestock with haunches ripped off

– Isolated bite marks in the throat area

– Intestines removed through rectum

– Smaller animals shredded across a large area

– Low fawn, rabbit and other small wildlife numbers

– Livestock or wildlife concentrating in “safe” areas, extremely unsettled or simply gone from an area

Options for removing coyotes include calling and trapping. Trapping is more effective long term but calling can help knock down predation short term. Rule #1 you cant fool a coyotes nose.

Trapping coyotes can be extremely frustrating for a landowner. A good trap for coyotes requires in depth knowledge of coyote physiology and behavior. Steel traps when set up and used properly just hold animals without injuring. In fact my trapline dog has been caught in one of my coyote traps and was running next to the truck uninjured minutes later. When trapping the smallest of details cannot be over looked and will 100% decide between a coyote in a trap or another animal killed.

Calling coyotes can be done fairly easy for a short period of time. Its easy to take out the dumb ones. Once you call enough and miss enough, you condition the animals to your methods.

Improper calling and trapping techniques condition the animals to your trapping or calling methods. This is called “educating’ them in the industry. Educated animals become much harder to trap or call. If you are considering hiring someone, it will cost you much more for the professional to catch or shoot educated animals.

Texas Wildlife Management and Logistics uses proven traditional trapping methods for trapping and the most advanced electronic caller, scent elimination and rifle system available to eliminate your coyote problem.

Coyote facts:

Female coyotes will respond to low population numbers by ovulating more eggs. This is a response to the increase of food caused by lower population density.

In an area with little rabbit hunting, coyote populations and rabbit populations have an inverse relationship. If you have a high population of rabbits, your coyote numbers are down. When the rabbit population drops back down, you have a high coyote population. If you are in an area that historically doesn’t have many rabbits or the rabbits have been wiped out, this relationship switches to fawns or other small game.

Controlling your coyote population is beneficial to livestock and all other animals. Even if you aren’t finding animals dead or losing livestock. A good coyote program will be beneficial to every animal on your property.

Coyotes are extremely territorial and opportunistic, these qualities make calling them possible.
